This Tea May Do More Than Quench Your Thirst

Drinking black tea kombucha every day may support gut health, especially for people with obesity. A new study in The Journal of Nutrition found that kombucha can help reduce harmful gut bacteria and increase beneficial ones. Participants who were overweight saw the biggest improvements after eight weeks of daily kombucha.

The kombucha used in the study was rich in natural plant compounds called phenols, which may support gut health. In people with obesity, the drink boosted levels of a helpful bacteria called Subdoligranulum and reduced types linked to weight gain. These changes made their gut bacteria look more like those of people at a healthy weight.

While gut bacteria improved, the study didn’t find major changes in digestion-related markers, like gut permeability or short-chain fatty acids. Still, researchers say kombucha could be a helpful tool for better gut health. Longer studies are needed to confirm the full benefits.
