Virgin coconut oil (VCO) and its main fatty acid, lauric acid (LA), may help fight cancer and reduce side effects from chemotherapy, according to a new scientific review. These natural compounds have antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that can slow cancer cell growth, trigger cancer cell death, and boost the effects of certain cancer treatments.
Studies in animals and lab settings suggest VCO can protect the liver, kidneys, and heart from chemotherapy damage, lower oxidative stress, and improve immune function. In small studies, some breast cancer patients who took VCO reported a better quality of life. However, most research is early-stage and done in cells or animals, not large groups of people.
Experts say more human studies are needed to confirm safety and benefits. If proven effective, VCO and LA could one day be used alongside standard treatments as a natural way to help fight cancer and reduce treatment side effects.
