Deaths from falls among older Americans have tripled in the last 30 years, and researchers believe prescription medications are a major factor. Known as fall risk–increasing drugs (FRIDs), these prescriptions can make seniors dizzy, drowsy, or unsteady — raising the odds of serious accidents.
The most concerning drugs include opioids, antidepressants, sleep aids, benzodiazepines, and gabapentinoids. Studies show older adults on these medications are much more likely to fall. Those taking multiple FRIDs face up to a 33 percent higher risk of serious injury. Experts say the sharp rise in falls can’t be explained by aging alone.
Doctors emphasize the goal isn’t to eliminate prescriptions but to cut back on unnecessary FRIDs when possible. For older adults, discussing safer alternatives with a healthcare provider could help reduce falls, prevent hospital stays, and protect independence later in life.
