The ‘Forever’ Chemicals Found in Feminine Hygiene Products

Researchers have found evidence of ‘forever chemicals,’ or PFAS (perfolyfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances), lurking in commonly used feminine hygiene products, including tampons, pads, menstrual cups and reusable underwear.

These chemicals, which Providence Saint John’s Health Center’s OG-GYN, Dr. Sherry Ross, says can travel through materials and skin, can increase the risk of cancer, liver disease, kidney disease, obesity, diabetes and immune system dysfunction.

PFAS are also found in the environment, as they do not break down; they can move through soils and contaminate water; and they bioaccumulate in fish and wildlife, essentially hitting women with a double whammy of exposure.

What’s concerning is that users of feminine care products may never know they’re at risk because the chemicals are not on the products’ ingredient lists.
