A new study reveals that the best way to enjoy me-time is in a semi-social setting, like reading a book at a coffee shop. Published in PLOS One, the research found that being alone while still feeling connected to others helps restore energy and improve well-being. Lead researcher Morgan Quinn Ross from Oregon State University explains that complete isolation isn’t as effective as me-time that includes some level of social presence.

The study, which surveyed nearly 900 people, discovered that solitude and social interaction aren’t opposites. While socializing can be draining, total isolation can also leave you feeling disconnected and low on energy. Activities like seeing a movie alone or playing a game on your phone offer the best of both worlds — time to yourself with the comfort of nearby people.

Your attitude toward solitude also matters. If you choose me-time to recharge and know you’ll reconnect with others later, it’s more likely to boost your mood. But avoiding people because of negative feelings toward social interaction can have the opposite effect. The key takeaway? Choosing the right balance can make your me-time truly restorative.
