Study Shows Higher Heart Attack Risk During Presidential Elections

A recent study found that people with certain genetic traits, like anxiety or depression, face a significantly higher risk of heart attacks during periods of social or political stress, such as elections or major holidays. The research, presented at the American College of Cardiology’s annual session, revealed that those with high genetic stress sensitivity had a 36% higher risk of acute coronary syndromes (ACS).

Lead Author, Dr. Shady Abohashem highlighted the strong connection between mental and cardiovascular health, advocating for stress sensitivity screening in cardiovascular risk assessments. Identifying high-risk individuals could lead to targeted interventions and preventive strategies.

As the 2024 election approaches, managing stress through exercise or yoga is recommended. This study underscores the importance of considering both mental and genetic factors in heart health.
