A new study shows mindfulness meditation does more than help you relax — it can sharpen your focus at any age. Researchers at USC found that just 30 days of daily mindfulness practice improved people’s ability to pay attention and ignore distractions. Participants meditated for only 10 to 15 minutes a day, yet tests showed they reacted faster and stayed on task more easily.
The study tracked 69 adults, both young and old, who either practiced mindfulness or listened to an audiobook each day. Even though the meditation group didn’t feel much different, they performed better on eye-tracking tests. They were quicker to spot targets and better at avoiding distractions, suggesting that meditation can strengthen brain areas that control focus and alertness.
Experts say adding just a few minutes of mindfulness to your day can help keep your brain sharp, especially as you age. It can make everyday tasks like driving, reading, or talking with friends feel easier and more focused. The key is consistency: even if you don’t notice changes right away, daily practice can deliver real benefits over time.
