‘One of the larger mysteries I’ve ever seen’: industrial chemical found in illicit fentanyl

Researchers have found high levels of an industrial chemical called BTMPS in the illegal fentanyl supply in the United States, according to a recent study published in the medical journal JAMA. Typically used in plastic manufacturing, BTMPS raises serious concerns when mixed with fentanyl due to its potential health risks. Animal studies suggest that BTMPS could cause skin irritation and damage to organs.

The study, involving researchers from UCLA and community drug-checking programs, analyzed drug samples from cities like Los Angeles and Philadelphia. They discovered that many samples had more BTMPS than fentanyl, some with up to 56% BTMPS. Indicating that the chemical is being introduced during the drug-making process.

The addition of BTMPS to fentanyl is dangerous because it increases the risk of toxicity. Fentanyl is already a potent opioid with a high risk of overdose, and the presence of BTMPS could make it even more hazardous. This situation highlights the unpredictable nature of the illegal drug market and the need for better control and testing of street drugs.
