A salmonella outbreak has been linked to cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers in Florida. So far, 26 people in 15 states have gotten sick, and nine were hospitalized. The cucumbers were sold between April 29 and May 19 to stores, restaurants and food distributors. Officials say some people who got sick had eaten cucumbers on cruise ships from Florida.
This is the same grower tied to a larger salmonella outbreak last year. Health investigators found the same bacteria on the farm as in the people who got sick. The FDA says organic cucumbers are not part of this recall. They are still working to find out where all the cucumbers were sent.
If you’re not sure where your cucumbers came from, it’s safest to throw them away. Salmonella symptoms include diarrhea, fever, vomiting and stomach cramps. Most people recover in a few days, but young children, older adults and those with weak immune systems may get very sick and need medical care.
