Health Alert Issued for Organic Ground Beef Sold in 25 States

A new health alert warns that some ground beef sold at Whole Foods may be contaminated with E. coli. The recall applies to 1-pound packages of Organic Rancher 85% lean ground beef with use- or freeze-by dates of June 19 or 20. These products came from a Vermont supplier and were sold in 25 states and Washington, D.C.

While the beef is no longer on store shelves, it may still be in home refrigerators or freezers. The USDA says do not eat it. Instead, throw it away or return it to the store. So far, no one has gotten sick, but the bacteria can cause serious illness.

To stay safe, always cook ground beef to 160°F using a food thermometer. The company says it fixed the issue and is committed to product safety.
