Experts Say This Daily Common Habit May Be the Key to Clearer Thinking

Spending time outdoors may be one of the simplest ways to clear your mind. New research shows that just 15 to 20 minutes in nature can improve focus and lift mood—even if the walk isn’t especially enjoyable. Natural sights and sounds seem to help the brain recharge and restore attention.

The benefits aren’t limited to sunny days. One study found that even winter walks gave the same mental boost. Longer outings, around 50 minutes, may provide an even bigger lift for thinking and concentration.

Nature also helps calm racing thoughts in people with depression and strengthens feelings of connection to others. While houseplants and nature-inspired designs can help, experts agree nothing replaces the full effect of being outdoors, where all five senses are engaged.
