EU takes Bold Steps to Eliminate Mercury Use

The EU has adopted new regulations to ban the use of dental amalgams and prohibit the manufacturing, import, and export of mercury-added products. This major step aligns with the EU’s zero pollution ambition and includes significant changes set to take effect starting January 2025.

These new rules will extend the current ban on dental amalgam use in specific groups to include everyone in the EU. Additional restrictions on mercury-containing lamps and other products will also be implemented in the coming years.

By December 2029, the Commission will review exemptions on the use of dental amalgam and assess the availability of mercury-free alternatives. Additionally, the Commission will evaluate measures taken by member states on mercury emissions from crematoria and the effectiveness of relevant abatement technologies.
