Alcohol Labels May Soon Warn of Cancer Risks

Alcoholic drinks could soon display cancer risk warnings, according to U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy. A new report links alcohol to seven types of cancer: breast, colorectal, liver, mouth, throat (pharyngeal), esophageal, and voice box (laryngeal) cancers. About 16.4% of breast cancer cases are tied to alcohol, and it’s the third-leading cause of cancer in the U.S., behind tobacco and obesity. Despite these risks, most Americans are unaware of the connection.

Current alcohol labels warn about birth defects and impairment but don’t mention cancer. The Surgeon General is calling for updated warnings and a review of drinking guidelines to reflect these risks. Experts say awareness is key, as many people are unaware of alcohol’s role in cancer. The American Medical Association supports these updates, stating they could save lives by encouraging healthier choices.

Women face higher risks from alcohol, even in smaller amounts, due to differences in how their bodies process it. Experts note that while some alcohol-related damage can be reversed, cutting back now can reduce future risks. Any changes to warning labels will require congressional approval. Meanwhile, updated federal guidelines expected this year could also help raise awareness about the dangers of drinking.
