A South African facility meant to help struggling nations access life-saving medications has been transitioned into a vaccine technology hub for experimental mRNA gene therapy.
In a visit to the facility for the launch, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called the repurposed program “a sustainable model for mRNA technology transfer to give low- and middle-income countries equitable access to vaccines and other lifesaving health products.”
His five-day visit will include discussions on mRNA technology’s sustainability and its potential to combat other diseases, such as HIV and tuberculosis.
