Popular Weight Loss Drugs May Raise Risk of Sudden Vision Loss

New research suggests drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro may slightly increase the risk of a rare eye condition called NAION, or “eye stroke.” This happens when blood flow to the optic nerve is blocked, causing sudden vision loss without pain.

Scientists looked at health records from more than 159,000 people with type 2 diabetes. One study found a small increase in NAION and other optic nerve problems in people taking these drugs. Another study found no link to NAION but did see a small rise in diabetic eye disease.

Doctors say people with diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea should have regular eye exams and let their eye doctor know if they take these medications. If you notice sudden changes in vision, get medical help right away. More studies are underway to learn more about these risks.
