Hate the Gym? New Study Says Your Personality Could Hold the Key to Loving Exercise


If you hate running or crowded gyms, there’s good news. A new study in Frontiers in Psychology says choosing workouts that match your personality can make exercise more enjoyable and easier to stick with. Extroverts often prefer high-energy group classes, while introverts or those with anxiety lean toward calm, private activities.

Researchers at University College London tracked 132 adults for eight weeks, matching their exercise styles to their personalities. Everyone got fitter, but those who picked workouts that suited them enjoyed it more and felt less stressed. Even people with high stress reported feeling calmer when their workouts fit their personality.

You don’t need to do hardcore training or team sports to stay healthy. Walking, yoga, home workouts, or anything that feels right for you can work. As lead researcher Flaminia Ronca put it, if exercise feels better, more people will keep doing it—and that’s what really matters.
